This property was in an ideal setting; mature trees and native plantings were abundant. The approach was to do everything we could to retain the existing trees, and seamlessly reconnect with the forest.
Careful composition of the rocks into rhythmic bedrock formations enabled grade changes in an unobtrusive manner. Minimal excavation, footings, and construction of hardscapes outside the building envelope, reduced the impact and stress on the existing trees.
The use of 95% local native plants brought the forest back to the door, reduced maintenance, and will only improve the ecosystem over time.
ASYMMETRICAL design organic planning native plants sustainable ecosystems
The appearance of bedrock formations and large trees retained in the process, form rhythmic structure in both the horizontal and vertical planes, grounding and complementing the architecture. The path and even the new stairs, look as though they have been there forever, making a walk in the landscape a timeless experience.
One may find it hard to believe that all the rock shown in the photographs on this website was transported and installed on location (see Naturalistic Construction)
Naturalistic landscape design can be complimentary with contemporary West Coast design.
